Chapter Nine

Sara had a good feeling about her date this evening. Out of all of the men so far Daniel was the only one who asked about her goals in life and her dreams during their email exchange. Of course, she wasn’t going to tell him that her only goal at the moment was to find a date for Tiffany’s wedding. But still, it felt as though he really wanted to get to know her, which was refreshing and made her look forward to the date even more.

Daniel offered to pick Sara up at her home but she took Ian’s advice and met him at Thai Orchid, one of her favorite places in Campbell, across from Outback Steakhouse.

How cool that my new home is close to so many amazing restaurants! Does Ian like Thai food? What is he doing right now? Where the hell did those thoughts come from?

Daniel walked in and headed in her direction. Her gaze dropped down to his swinging hand carrying a small box and some flowers. She wondered if the flowers were expensive.

The thought of Buster—Mr. Money Bags—made her laugh. What a loser.

“Did I do something funny?” asked Daniel.

“No, no,” said Sara, trying to clear the smile from her face. She held out her hand, in case Daniel didn’t like hugs. “Nice to meet you.”

He grabbed her hand and kissed it. “Nice to meet you too.” He handed her flowers and a small box of chocolates. “These are for you.”

“Thank you, that’s sweet of you.”

She’d received flowers plenty of times in the past, but no man had ever given her chocolate on the first date.

A man after my own heart.

The hostess approached and took them past the large money tree and the statue of Buddha to their table.

Daniel pointed to the private room behind the silky green curtains. “Do you mind if we sit in one of the booths in the back room?”

“That’s fine,” said the waitress. “Follow me.”

Sara was okay with it too. There was more privacy and it would be easier to talk. Maybe he was a romantic.

After they ordered dinner and tea, Sara picked up the flowers and smelled them. “Thanks again for the flowers. They’re beautiful.” She smelled them again and smiled.

“My pleasure. I made the bouquet myself.”

Sara stared at the flowers—a mix of gardenias, pink tulips, and green poms. He even wrapped them in raffia. Then she studied Daniel.

“I know what you’re thinking,” said Daniel. “So before you come to the conclusion that I’m gay, let me explain.”

Wow. He was good. “Okay.”

“My grandmother was a florist for over forty years,” he explained. “When I was young I spent a lot of time at her shop. In fact, the first job I ever had was working as her assistant. I learned a lot about flowers—how to care for them, cut them, arrange them. And I learned something even more amazing…flowers have an impact on emotional health.”

“That doesn’t surprise me. I don’t think there was ever a time when I didn’t smile after receiving flowers.
